Everything You Need to Know to Design Your Dream Kitchen: Plan First
If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. ~ Benjamin Franklin
Make a list of your needs, wants and must-haves. And remember your needs trump your wants and must-haves; if your kitchen is not functional, it doesn’t matter how pretty and perfectly symmetrical it appears, you just wont be happy with it...I promise. So make a list that will consist of: everything you need to fit in your kitchen, the activities that will take place in your kitchen, do you love entertaining, how many mouths do you need to feed, do you and your partner like to cook together, do you have your cake business out of your home, will it double as a homework hangout? What ever your kitchen needs to be for you, take notes. If you really want your dream kitchen to feel like a dream, you need to have the space work with you not against you.
Everything You Need to Know to Design Your Dream Kitchen: Keep it Simple
Often when we go over the top with anything, we tend to get sick of it. No matter how much time or money is spent on your kitchen, if there’s too much “going on”, you will be wishing for another kitchen reno in no time. Don’t be afraid to add some style, color and fun to your kitchen with accessories that can be interchangeable through seasons and new trends. Dress up your island with a beautiful centre piece, some great bar stools and stunning pendants, add a splash of color with some fun hand towels, and if you have the wall space add a statement art piece or create a gallery wall. There are so many ways to accessorize your kitchen and keep it trendy while keeping the cabinets, backsplash and countertops simple and timeless.
Everything You Need to Know to Design Your Dream Kitchen: Trend Alert
If you are loving the latest kitchen trends, and find yourself being a trend seeker…there’s nothing wrong with that. The blues and greys are very popular right now for cabinet colors; however, a few years down the road, you may get tired of that color. So if you are the type that is always wanting the looks you see in magazines…here’s my little secret: choose a simple timeless cabinet style that will serve as a great foundation and can easily be updated in the future with door and drawer hardware, paint, lighting and countertop accessories; giving you the potential to dramatically change the overall look of the kitchen and allowing you to keep up the with latest trends without having to demo the entire kitchen.
Everything You Need to Know to Design Your Dream Kitchen: L.O.V.E. Your Countertops
Okay so think of it like this... you are going to buy a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes to go along with that perfect dress you bought for the upcoming gala. Would you just choose any pair of Jimmy Choo’s just because they are “Jimmy Choo’s” or would you do research on line and find the perfect pair of shoes that you L.O.V.E. and will not only go with your dress but everything else in your wardrobe, not to mention you would probably try to find a pair that you wont get bored of or that wont quickly go out of style. Think of how important those Jimmy Choo’s are to the overall look of the outfit…now think of your counter tops. Countertops are the Jimmy Choo’s of your kitchen.
Countertops consist of about 1/5th of the entire cost of the kitchen, so if your unsure of the countertop that you’ve chosen, that can be a good chunk of change that you’re gambling with; and not to mention, the counter tops aren’t so easily interchangeable. There are so many countertops out there to choose from, without getting overwhelmed, I suggest narrowing down your color preference first then seeing what your options are from quartz, granite, concrete, recycled glass, marble, solid surface or maybe even a butcher block. Love your countertop, you will use it every day, work on it everyday, entertain on it, eat and play on it...you get what I’m saying.
Everything You Need to Know to Design Your Dream Kitchen: Lighting is Everything
You spend a lot of time in the kitchen, it’s a working space, it needs to be well lit. There needs to be sufficient light to see what your doing, mixing, cutting, rolling, sautéing, cleaning… the list goes on. This goes back to how important that the planning stage is, if you don’t have enough light in your kitchen, the space will only be working against you. Keep in mind these 3 types of lighting that are key to design especially when it comes to the kitchen. Ambient Lighting: this is the overall general lighting that gives a nice even glow and illuminates the entire space. In most cases this will be recessed lighting (pot lights). Task Lighting: this is light that is focused on a specific area for example the under cabinet lighting that illuminates the countertop for food preparation, and other working tasks. The third type of lighting is Accent Lighting: I always consider accent lighting to be the “jewelry” of the space. Accent lighting is not only used to highlight features in the space; but can also just be the “bling” that completes the look.
