Having trouble finding your color inspiration? Maybe you haven’t quite found that perfect paint color, but don’t give up yet! A lot of my clients come to me because they have found themselves struggling with finding a source inspiration to help them choose their perfect paint color. Inspiration can be found all around us, we simply need to figure out what we like (and sometimes what we don’t) and what catches our eye. It is key to understand that the source of inspiration doesn’t necessarily need to match up exactly with the paint color, sometimes it could even be finding the perfect contrasting paint color that will make the fireplace pop or your new painting really stand out. Its also important to note that a source of inspiration doesn’t always have to be something existing in the home, it also doesn’t have to be design related at all. Here are some great ideas to get you thinking about what your inspiration could be.
Color Inspiration - Choosing the perfect paint color based on......SMARTIES?
I just had to share this story to prove to you that inspiration is truly everywhere and I have been using inspiration to choose my paint colors ever since I was a little girl. My parents were building a new house and it was at the stage where the painter needed to have our color choices for our bedrooms. As we were sitting around the campfire one evening, my mom reminded me, I needed to choose a color for my room (and I really was allowed to choose whatever I wanted). At the time, I was eating a box of smarties, I held three smarties in my hand, blue, green and yellow; they actually worked perfectly together and I was instantly in love! Being the bright cheery girl I am, I choose my paint color scheme using inspiration from my box of smarties and it turned out fabulous. The moral of the story is not to paint your living room blue green and yellow but instead to truly look around at the things that you love in life, the things that make you happy and in turn using them to inject color and beauty into your home.
Color Inspiration - choosing the perfect paint color based on your fireplace
The stone surrounding a fireplace can be a great start in finding some inspiration. I worked in a home this past year that had a beautiful slate fireplace as the focal point in the living room. The slate had greens, blues, greys and browns running through it. However, the green was very prominent and the homeowner wasn’t a fan. The fireplace was in the centre of the room with custom mirrors and beautiful rustic console tables on either side complimenting the room quite nicely. The fireplace really was the star of the show and it quickly became our source for inspiration. With no desire to replace the slate, we needed to come up with a solution that would hide the green. We loved the dark grey blues in the slate, so we decided to chose a paint shade that picked up on those colors and would subdue the greens making them less noticeable.
Color Inspiration - choosing the perfect paint color based on your favorite piece of artwork
Using your favourite piece of artwork is another great way to help you chose your perfect shade for the space. I recently worked with a couple that had a beautiful watercolor painting hung above the fireplace in the living room. It was so beautiful, truly one of a kind. After talking with them for only a few minutes I soon found out that this painting would be the inspiration behind the entire design. Shades of blues, greens, grays and browns used in the painting were incorporated throughout the house creating an element of flow and unity. So in some cases you can choose a paint color scheme for your entire home from one piece of artwork in your home.
Color Inspiration - choosing the perfect paint color based on your fabulous new area rug
Maybe you recently found a fabulous new area rug, it fits perfect in the space; however, it could look that much better if the wall colors were changed. In this case we are not wanting to match the paint color with the area rug, instead we are wanting the color to “go” with area rug. Essentially we want the two to compliment each other. If the rug is in the warmer tones, choose a warmer shade. If it consists more of cooler greys and blues, go with a cooler shade for the walls, this will help to create a cohesive look in the space.
Color Inspiration - choosing the perfect paint color based on your design style
If you have already nailed down your favourite design style you can totally use that as your source of inspiration. If you love the industrial look, you would choose from whites, and a range of greys from light grey to the darkest charcoal. If your wanting to go with the rustic farmhouse feel, keeping the walls a light neutral shade that will showcase the wooden accent pieces. (Remember what I said about neutrals, they can be found in a variety of colors.) If your all about modern style, choose a color that looks clean and fresh. Find the common denominator in your preferred design style, if the colors are usually light- then choose a light shade; if the colors tend to be in the neutral zone – then pick your desired neutral; if your favourite design style is often seen using bright or bold colors – make it your own by choosing your number one bright bold shade.
Color Inspiration - choosing the perfect paint color based on the world of fashion
My mom recently took me out shopping for my birthday. I don’t know if I have mentioned this yet but I love shopping. I also love fashion, not saying I’m an expert or anything, but I often find inspiration when I am out searching for the perfect outfit. So yes its true, you can find you design inspiration in the world of fashion. For example, I seen a manikin wearing the cutest white jeans, with a beautiful floral printed top , tan distressed leather shoes, a chic chunky aqua bracelet, a long gold necklace and finished off with the perfect jean jacket. So I went home and covered my walls in a floral print…. I’m joking. However, I was inspired to put a color palette together for a living room. Here it goes; subtle light blue walls with white drapery and a white linen sofa cover, paired with two floral printed chairs, outlined with a large jute area rug, layered with a blue and white quatrefoil rug, and finishing off the room by accenting with aqua glass vases placed on a rustic wooden tray with gold handles placed on a light tan distressed leather boxy end table….. I could go on but I’m sure you get the point, right?
Color Inspiration - choosing the perfect paint color based on your favorite sport/sports team
I have many sports fans in my life. To name a few; my dad who I think is addicted to both golf and hockey (and who is also part superhero, but we will talk about that another time), my husband (that is if sport fishing and hunting counts), and my bestie who is the biggest foot ball fan I know and more specifically the biggest Indianapolis Colts fan I know! So finding inspiration based on your favourite sport or sports team is a big deal in my world. Maybe you’re not quite on board with transforming your serene master bedroom in lieu of your husband’s beloved hockey team… I’m just gonna throw it out there, its probably the Canucks. But maybe you have an empty space in the basement that needs some love, and transforming it into a media room or a man cave inspired by your team’s jersey or your favourite fishing spot, could be the perfect fix for the space.
Color Inspiration - remember to take everything into context
Now that I have given you some ideas of where to find inspiration to choose your perfect paint color, its time to get to work. Just remember, take everything into to context. Do you suffer from tunnel vision when trying to choose a paint color, then realize soon after, the walls completely clash with the flooring? Remember to take note of all the pieces in the space that will not be changing, such as the sofa, carpet, kitchen cabinets or your grandmother’s heirloom table. Painting is not meant to cause a domino effect of changes that need to be made in the space but instead it should enhance the visual appeal of the room and should compliment everything in the space.
